Preparing New Vets for Transition A few years ago, as a workplace and career author and consultant, I worked with the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Defense to overhaul the militaryâsTransition Assistance Program (TAP)2. This mandatory five- to seven-day program educates departing troops on job skills, vet benefits, and personal finances. The course explains the expectations, behavioral styles, cultural norms, and âlingoâ associated with civilian employment and helps veterans adjust to a less rigid routine with increased individual competition. Perhaps most importantly, it guides veterans in effectively translating skills acquired in the military â" which often include strategic thinking, scenario planning, critical thinking, problem-solving, coaching, self-discipline, time management, attention to detail, teamwork, interpersonal communication, and adaptability â" to civilian jobs in which these exact attributes are needed. Even though college tuition is up, due to the high demand colleges are receiving right now, it is well worth the money due to the higher education level you will have over seventy percent of US adults, which gives you an educational advantage over a majority of your competition. What Companies Look At For new people that are just now entering the work force, it is more difficult to get a job because of their lack of work experience. This doesnt leave employers with a lot to look at, so your education becomes the thread that you are forced to hang on to. Employers will base your entire work quality on your education, which not only includes your degree, but it includes your GPA as well. Some employers do not actually pay attention to your GPA and will only look at your degree, but if it is a close tie between two possible employees, it could come down to whoever did better in school. Inspirational Thought for the Week and the What If Game What if the rest of your life was the best of your life? Yes, I got this one from my favorite Ever Wonder book. I like this one because it incorporates Law of Attraction principles; seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty. This quote is a perfect example of a coaching technique my coach taught me once: The What If Game. For a few minutes each day, spend some time thinking about What If⦠and then go UP with your thoughts-meaning think of positive things youd like to have in your life. For example, for me I might say What if The Today Show called tomorrow to interview me about the boomerang generation and helping them find careers they love. Or, What ifâ¦flights to Machu Picchu suddenly went on sale and my hubby and I decided we had to go this month. (Weve been dying to go to there.
